Second Green Man Image? You Decide

I took photos today of what I feel is the masculine face in Houston's Heights Boulevard Green Man tree. After walking around the tree to follow arms, legs, spines, and even proportions, the position of this second face does correlate to the intricacy of the tree's combined trunks growth. If you consider the protrusion of the broken limb to be the "nose", the "mouth" and "eyes" are findable. This is where you must decide, as we all do. Her face is visible in the photo below his.

Your fancy lends credence or your logic infuses doubt. Whichever you believe to be true IS true for you. I have overlaid the photo with marks to show where my mind sees the face. Kinda. I think I've drawn it as a basic happy face. The image I see is sleeping and almost expressionless. But what I have marked is the closest thing to a face in the area where the face has to be for them to be so tightly spooned together within the trunk. See what you think.

Having grown up climbing Chinese Tallow trees, I'd estimate this tree to be anywhere between twenty and fifty years old. The pairing of the two trees growing into one has made it difficult to tell by the girth of the main trunk. Here is the side photo that shows them spooning. What do you think? Do we have a mysterious couple living and loving within the body of this tree or is this just fall fantasy? You decide.

Green Man Update

I visited a while with the Green Man tree this morning and have two notes of update. First, the tree is not in the 900 block, but rather the 800 block, a bit north of center. There are two trees heralding it from the south: a glorious sycamore and a majestic oak. As you pass the oak walking north, you'll see the Chinese tallow with the Green Man on the right (east) as you come around a gentle curve.

Second, I believe I may have found the other countenance. I didn't have my camera with me today, but I'll take it with me tomorrow. The photos I have do not show all of this second "face" but it is directly above the first. I must say that the first seems very feminine to me and the second is distinctly masculine.

New photo to come!

The Green Man on Heights Boulevard

Early one morning last week I was walking Heights Boulevard and I looked up to see this tree. I have been walking this path for almost three years now and was quite startled to realize I had missed "seeing" this tree. I will say that I usually start at the north end of the boulevard and have just recently started my walks from the south end. Someone recently trimmed sucker branches off the trunk, which may be why I am able to "see" now, where before small branches and their leaves may have obscured the view. I recall seeing volunteers out last week digging, cleaning, and enhancing the Boulevard, as they sometimes do. I know that all those who walk, run, or even drive the Boulevard appreciate all those volunteers' efforts. This time their efforts have revealed a certain treasure. If you will look with a fanciful eye up and to the left in this photo, you can easily see a face in the bark "looking" back at you.

In case you're not familiar with the legend or lore of the Green Man, he's kind of a Father Nature figure. He's a blend of everything we know about Pan, Odin, Santa Claus, Robin Hood, the Holly King, and many other legends that deal with the elemental energy of the forest and Winter. Since the beginning of time, man has realized that as Mother Nature completes the provision of her bountiful harvest, she must rest and recuperate. The leaves fall, the stubble in the fields is plowed under, the weather cools, and the growing season seems to cease. Mother Nature will return with the Spring Equinox. Earlier here in Houston, later further up north. Our ash trees bud out February 2nd, but plums and pears bloom in January. While Mother Nature rests, the Green Man rules.

This tree is a Chinese tallow, commonly called a china-berry tree here. I know that the original Mr. Teas, of Teas Nursery fame, planted Chinese tallows all over the city because they turned such lovely colors. Most of our trees don't get a chance to turn the scarlets and golds of the maples and aspens of states further north. But these trees do change colors for us. A cold snap will pop their colors almost overnight. As you can see by these photos, there has been no cold snap in Houston yet, but I will say that I picked up two scarlet and gold china-berry tree leaves over a month ago when I first sensed the onset of Autumn.

This tree "faces" south, so if you approach it from the north, the view is quite different. Just as striking, but completely different. The view from the south is the only one with the "face" so clearly defined. There are "arms" and "legs" in the curves of the trunk. It seems as if there is a couple spooned together, frozen forever in their vertical embrace. I have been walking around this tree for many days now, and have been so moved by the energy of the tree I think about it as I approach it, and say "farewell" to it as I pass it again, completing my walk. The tree has been on my mind so much lately it even inspired me to remember to bring my camera, take these photos, and write this blog. As you can see in this image, there are two "bodies" in this tree. Though I have looked carefully for the other face, I have yet to "see" it. This morning I walked around it slowly and thoughtfully, completely present in the moment. I touched the tree but have not yet "leaned into" its energy field.

The tree's spirit seems to call out with its forever open "mouth" marked with its orangish lips. I don't get a sense of fear or dread or entrapment at all. More of a delicious sense of calm serenity that comes with being held in a lover's embrace. The upper "arm" seems to gently frame the "face" while the lower "arm" seems like a lover's arm holding their lover's arm to their body. Realize that all this anthropomorphizing is fanciful and romantic, but know too that we see our world as we believe it to be. I encourage you to learn about the Green Man. You'll find him when you look for him. I've seen him in drips of paint on my window sill. I've seen him in the patterns of the falling leaves. I've even seen him in the carvings of my sister's fireplace mantle.

The Green Man's lore dates back as far back as time itself. Man is just as aware of the growing season as the winter. For every day there is a night, for every summer there is a winter, for every birth there is a death. The Wheel of Life includes a bit of every season and cycle in which we may delight daily. I encourage you to research and celebrate the Green Man. If you'd like to visit this one, you'll find him on Heights Boulevard, between 10th and 9th Streets. If you find the other face, I hope you'll let me know.

This second video addresses getting down to the details with setting the stage for support and success in your Knowledge and Self-Improvement gua. Start with your desk - whether at work or at home. Cast the Bagua matrix across the surface of the desk like a tic-tac-toe matrix, considering where your chair pulls into the desk as the "entrance." Furthermore, the vertical face of drawers to either side of you are also subject to the projection of the bagua, with the area at your feet considered to be the entrance. Clear the clutter out of your drawers each day while you're on a phone call and watch things begin to happen in your life. Always do clutter clearing in small bits to ensure the change stays implemented.

Your Power is in Your Awareness of Your Power

When you can stay in awareness of your power, your power is infinite.

Consider that one day you may feel a bit fearful or tired. On that day, any person you approach will seem to be more unapproachable. Any task you attempt will seem more difficult.

But on days when you are feeling the strength of your connection to your own source of power, any person you approach will be deliciously attracted to you. Any task you attempt will be completed with ease.

Staying in awareness requires focus. This is the purpose of meditation. I wear a ring to remind myself. You might wear a bracelet or a ballcap. What your reminder is doesn't matter, but it will be as powerful for you as Dumbo's feather was for him.

Remember to remember: your power is in your awareness of your power...and fly!!

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse of June 26

Last Saturday night you may have looked up and seen the full moon. Depending on where you were and when you were out, you may have gotten lucky, as photographer Brad Riza did when he snapped this image.

Eclipses, by definition, mark a loss of light - or power, prominence, or even significance. The source of illumination is lost. Sometimes that loss is temporary. But sometimes that loss is permanent. You may find yourself in a situation today that is markedly different from where you were last week at this time. It's much like you have crossed a bridge, only to turn and discover the bridge has disappeared behind you and you can't get back to where you were.

The good news is that you have grown. You can't ungrow and you can't go back. So look around at where you are now and make the best of it. Focus on the solutions instead of the problem. Take baby steps, but take steps.

Weekend after next there will be a solar eclipse. They always come in pairs. First the earth gets between the sun and the moon, dropping the earth's shadow onto the lunar surface. Then the moon gets between the sun and the earth.

NEVER look at the sun during an eclipse. Here's how you can safely watch the eclipse. Get two business cards. Poke a hole in one business card with a straight pin. Turn your back to the sun so it shines over your shoulder. Hold the business card with the hole over the card without the hole and about 6 inches apart. You'll see the circle of light shining through the hole of the top card slowly get sliced away as the moon moves between the sun and earth.

These eclipses will come again at the Winter Solstice in December. Whatever happened to you during these eclipses will echo into what is to come. I encourage you to journal now and refer back later. In this way you'll discover how eclipses affect you and be prepared for future events. There are generally two or three pairs of eclipses per year.

Summer Solstice: Bright Light and Clear Sight

On June 21st, the day of the summer solstice, we'll enjoy over 14 hours of day light. This is the peak of the fiery energy that comes from our sun. This is the season of the Red Phoenix. This is the time of year to pay attention to your own light and how it is perceived by others in your world.

Each of us has a personal light that shines forth from us. While we may not consciously think about it, we are fully aware that we give off light-sometimes even more than others. Look at the words in these common phrases that indicate our awareness of the light we emit: "The bride is radiant," "His smile lit up the room," "She is beaming with pride," "You're brilliant," "He's a star," and many others. Even the Bible cautions us not to "hide our light under a bushel basket."

This is the season to shine. The quality of your light shining out is manifested in your reputation. Make sure your reputation is shining steady and strong. Run an integrity check: do you actively keep your word, avoid making promises you can't keep, and follow through on any responsibility you have accepted? Along with the light comes the ability to be seen. Make sure you are seen as the star in your galaxy, rather than the darkness.

The secondary benefit of light is sight. Vision is enabled by light. Make sure you are able to see what is coming at you through both space and time. Get your eyes examined. Polish your glasses. Trim your bangs. While you're at it, trim up any tree branches lower than 8 feet off the ground and trim back any bushes taller than 4 feet. Wash your windows (not in direct sunlight) and make sure all the light bulbs in your house and office work.

Get out your resolutions from last January. See where you are along your list of goals. You may want to revise some of those resolutions now. Celebrate the ones you have already accomplished. Extend your vision another year down the road and write some new goals to guide the rest of the year. You'll check on those in about six months - at the Winter Solstice - the time for deep reflection. Be sure to give yourself something to warm up those chilly winter days. Meanwhile, happy summer everyone!!

Celebrate the Green

Today is my feast day - the celebration of St. Patrick's Day celebrates those named Patricia too. You are all invited to join me in the wearing of the green. Interestingly enough, this morning I noticed one of our trees has budded out and the lawn is greener than it was last week. Spring's energy is rising through the last days of Winter and we all feel the impending thrill of something starting. The more green replaces the brown, the more we are energized by the sun's rays (hemispheres and seasons are appropriately interchangeable here).

Green is the color that resonates with your heart chakra. A chakra is an invisible but very powerful spinning wheel of energy. You have seven major chakras in your body, each correlating to a color of the rainbow. What are you starting this Spring? Is your heart thrilled about it? Find ways to celebrate your new ideas. Just as your parents cheered and clapped as you took your first baby steps, cheer and applaud your own efforts in any new venture. Tell your family and friends about your efforts and goals. Their celebration adds to yours just as their energy adds to yours. By combining their support with your own focus, your goals and projects manifest with ease, just like tiny seedlings break through pavement and reach for the sky as they send down their roots.

If you are one who is much more familiar with the darkness and depression, I invite you to take a step today towards sitting in the sunshine of your life. Open your heart and let the sun shine in. Most of all, let your own light shine out. The whole world will be a brighter place with you shining in it! Celebrate the green and celebrate your heart.

10 Tips to Help Others Make Healthier Food Choices

When you watch your loved ones suffer because of their choices, you naturally want to help them make better choices. But that is not an option. Unless your loved one is younger 12, they have already developed their sense of will and know how to make their choices, regardless of what you prefer they choose.

It's a hard lesson for us to realize we can't force our children to change their bad habits, but it's even harder for our children to talk their parents about of their own bad habits. In fact, we can't decide for our spouses, friends, family, neighbors or anyone—except ourselves. We can't decide what others should or shouldn't eat, just like we can't chew their lunch for them. But there are ways we can help others make healthier choices—by making alternatives FUN!

• Share various and unusual fresh fruits and vegetables
• Invite them to dinner at your place
• Don't wear or use food-scented products (think jasmine, not cherry; pine, not lemon)
• Bring a heart-healthy dish to share to their place or to work
• Offer water with a slice of citrus instead of sweet tea
• Invite them to go swimming, bowling, bike-riding, or even walking with you
• Ask them to walk your dog with you
• Take dance lessons together or just go dancing on a regular basis
• Park far from the front door whenever you ride together
• Thank them for helping you to eat healthier or joining you in your activities

Remember to praise them for every step they take in the right direction for better food choices. Never, ever talk about or even think about what they're doing that you consider to be "wrong." Complement them on the roses in their cheeks, the way their clothes fit differently, or just hug them and tell them you love them. Just like no one responds well to nagging, everyone responds brilliantly to bragging!

Two Questions That Can Change Your LIfe

My good friend Liz Plaster of (Positive Performance LP here in Houston) just sent me this link in an email. Knowing how wise Liz is, I followed the link to see what was up.

At vimeo.com I was treated to a quick view into the mind of one of today's bright young minds. I was amazed at how perceptive Daniel Pink is. He is the author of DRIVE, The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us and A Whole New Mind. From his video here I saw a great depth of thought and awareness that most don't develop until after 45. I will definitely be picking up Daniel Pink's books to add to my library.

I watched the 2 minute video. It was short, sweet, and smart. As you realize the answer to the first question the path for its accomplishment immediately becomes clear. The answer to the second keeps your awareness on the distance you travel down your path every day. The choice for distance is up to you.

For those who don't take the time to answer these questions, the future is hazy and uncertain. Get clear on what you want. The Universe is waiting to take your order. What'll it be?

Full Moon and Luckiest Day of the Year

The moon is full today in the sign of Virgo. The two largest objects in our solar system, the sun and Jupiter are both now in the sign of Pisces. This is a wonderful day to celebrate your self, your connections to family, and your oneness with all. We are each part of the melody of the One Song, the UniVerse. Sing and dance, skip and hum, enjoy the expanding energy of the sun's return.

Tend to the details of your life: do your chores, groom yourself, care for your car or tools. Get organized and then go out and play! Know that whatever you dare today you will achieve! Tonight's lovely moon will shine down on your evening's celebration.

The Rowan Moon Moves into Leo and Warms Up the Last Days of Winter

As February comes to a close, the moon has moved into Leo and fired us up for fun, action, and appreciation. The fire of the sign of Leo comes from the Sun, its ruling "planet" and helps warm us up a bit today. Your moods will sparkle with sunlight and your smiles will beam your recognition that winter is losing its grip. We have been planting our seeds and choosing our goals for 2010 since January began.

As we recognize the thrill of the sprouting of the seeds we have planted, now comes a time of vision and celebration. Write down your visions for 2010's harvest. Fertilize the ground of your garden (mind and spirit) by celebrating a meal with friends and giving to those less fortunate than you. Check on elder relatives and neighbors. Your random acts of kindness bless not only the recipient, but also you, and anyone who witnesses what you do or even hears about what you have done. Don't do it for recognition. Do it because it feels good. Try not to get caught. Then do it some more.

We all get to enjoy our weekend and build up to the benefits of Sunday. the luckiest day of the 2010 for everyone. Sunday, February 28th Jupiter moves into Pisces with a full moon in Virgo. Light lots of candles and celebrate the returning light. Find time to bathe yourself in moonlight and starlight this weekend. Snuggle up with your little lions and enjoy the full moon!
