Avoid placing furniture around the perimeter of the room. You really don't have to live out the song "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother." Every seat in this room is disconnected and distant. All the furniture floats in this room. Simply sitting down can push the chair or sofa across that slick wood floor. Nothing can be counted on to stay steady. Anchor the furniture and the gathering zone with an area rug that is wider than the hearth and longer than the wall of windows.
